Emotional dysregulation is an expected part of child development. They're how young children show that they're upset—meltdowns can happen when kids are tired, hungry, or uncomfortable. As a young Indonesian mom, here's some tips that Rania, a parent from Indonesia, shares to handle her child's tantrum. Rania told us some useful tips that might help fellow parents.

"The key is not to get frustrated yourself." Rania said. She remembers from many parenting books she reads that, adults are way better in managing emotions. Therefore it's important to let ourselves be the child's "pillow", a safe space to express their emotions.

Another important point to remember is that children tend to throwing tantrums when they have limited language skills. So, without necessarily equip the children with appropriate language skills, bit by bit, the tantrum issue will not get solved any soon.

Self-Soothing Techniques

As a parent, you can start by try taking a proactive approach. These mindfulness techniques will help reduce the frequency of tantrums as they get older because they will have learned the skills to understand and regulate their emotions, and tantrums will no longer be useful for them.

The techniques may vary; from naming emotions one by one, mindful breathing, to journaling for other children. Rania added that she usually play classical music to help her child's remember the self-soothe that she taught to them.

Don't Project

Do not ever project your emotions to your children ("you are making ME upset") because it makes them learn that they are at fault for expressing their emotions and will be ashamed to do that again in the future. By doing that you are teaching your children that YOU, as a parent, are incapable of handling emotions yourself. Your child will not consider you as a safe space, therefore they will shut down and learning to sweep their problems under the rug.
